Forests Minister M. Mathiventhan on Thursday unveiled a plaque at Pallikaranai Eco Park on the event of World Wetland Day. The plaque incorporates particulars of the Pallikaranai marshlands, which was declared a Ramsar website in 2022.

Mr. Mathiventhan hoisted a nationwide flag on the park and took a pledge to guard wetlands. Supriya Sahu, Further Chief Secretary, Division of Setting and Local weather Change; Subrat Mohapatra, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests; Deepak Srivatsava, Further Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, and individuals took the oath to keep away from encroachments, dumping rubbish, and overusing wetland sources.

Famend classical dancer Leela Samson’s group carried out a Bharatanatyam sequence on the significance of preserving nature. The Pallikaranai marshland helps over 115 fowl species, 10 mammals, 21 reptiles, 10 amphibians, 46 fish, 9 molluscs, 5 crustaceans and 7 butterfly species. Mr. Mathiventhan stated a Ramsar website is of nice significance and efforts have to be made to guard them. Tamil Nadu has 14 Ramsar websites, 4 of which have been added in August 2022.

The Ramsar Conference encourages the designation of web sites containing consultant, uncommon or distinctive wetlands or wetlands which can be essential for conserving organic variety. As soon as designated, these websites are added to the Conference’s Listing of Wetlands of Worldwide Significance and turn into referred to as Ramsar websites.
